Special Board Game Event: Scythe and Dead of Winter – Games That Take A Little Bit Longer Than 2 hours To Play
Join us at Pandemonium for a special, community elected, 4-hour session to learn and play two games that we normally can’t demo! You’re especially welcome if you’ve never before played hobby board games (and are specifically curious about either of these games).
What is this event all about?
Every other week, we demo approximately four games from our library that have to be playable in fewer than two hours. This excludes some of the best games in the hobby, and we wanted to do something about that.
Thus, this is where the Longer Game Special Events come in. Games for these events play closer to three hours in length, so we’ll need to start a little earlier to give the games (and our players!) time to breathe.
How this works, logistically:
Due to community feedback, we’ll be populating these games on a first-come, first-play basis. If you want to play Scythe (or learn about it) come in at 5:00 p.m., when we’ll be starting the teach of the game; this time, Scythe will cap at 5 players. The rules explanation of Dead of Winter will start approximately at 6:00 p.m. and also caps at 5 players.
Also, do note that both of these tables are intended for those wanting to learn and try out either game. This event is not intended for competitive or experienced players – but, if you want to play either competitively, please let us know (via the survey here – last question)! We’ll make sure to save time on the calendar for that purpose during future events.
Also, we may be in Pandemonium’s back-room, depending on the status of the preceding event. So if you don’t see someone walking around with a lanyard, do walk through the RPG section, and see if anyone is back there!
And finally, what are we playing?
Our first selection was sourced from our community, and they chose Scythe and Dead of Winter.
Scythe is a competitive game for 1-5 players where you control territory to claim resources that help build and develop your expanding nation’s economic engine. War is possible – and sometimes strategically prudent – but it is not the focus of the game (despite the fact everyone can build giant mechs!). There is very little randomness in this game, so the joy of playing comes from discovering how to play the game better in different ways each time.
Dead of Winter is (ostensibly) a cooperative game of individual, hidden agendas where playing to win only sometimes aligns with the group’s interest and shared victory. You and your group of characters come together with other groups to survive a calamity during a zombie apocalypse (in the winter), and you all have to figure out how to mitigate randomness to survive with your people, morale, and team objective intact. Except sometimes, of course, there may be a traitor in your midst who only wins by everyone else losing the game.
So if you ever wanted to learn these games or just want to spend time with others who like playing games, come on out! And if you aren’t feeling the pot-pourri theme, stay tuned to our Events calendar for information on the next demoed session.
If you’d rather we meet at a different time OR if there are any board games in our collection you’d like to see us feature, let us know by filling out the Google Form here!
RULES FOR ATTENDING:
- Proof of COVID vaccination is required at EVERY EVENT. Either the presentation of the physical card or a clear picture will suffice. Pandemonium does not keep any records, written or otherwise, of vaccination status.
- Advance online registration is required.
- Anyone not registered in an ongoing event will not be allowed in the event space to maintain capacity limits.
- No food will be allowed in our event space for the time being. Drinking is allowed.
